The Union Hotel – Sackets Harbor, New York
The Union Hotel is one of the oldest surviving buildings in Sackets Harbor, and its history closely reflects the village’s rise as a military and commercial hub in the early 19th century.
Early Construction (1817–1818)
The Union Hotel was built in 1817–1818, just after the War of 1812, when Sackets Harbor was booming as a naval and shipbuilding center.
- Constructed by Frederick White, a prominent local figure
- Designed as a Federal-style stone structure, reflecting early American architectural trends
- Built with substantial size and durability, signaling its importance in a growing port town
At the time, Sackets Harbor saw thousands of soldiers, sailors, and workers passing through. A hotel like this was essential for accommodating travelers, military officers, and merchants.
Role as a Hotel in a Busy Port Town
During the early to mid-1800s, the Union Hotel operated as a public hotel and central gathering place.
- Sackets Harbor served as a key Great Lakes shipping and military hub
- The hotel hosted officers, traders, and travelers along Lake Ontario
- It became an important social center during the village’s most active commercial years
The building continued operating as a hotel until the 1860s.
Transition to Masonic Use (Late 19th Century)
Following its years as a hotel, the building was repurposed for community use.
- Became a Masonic Lodge serving local fraternal organizations
- Associated with early Masonic lodges in Jefferson County
- Continued its role as a central meeting place within the community
This transition reflects a broader 19th-century trend of adapting older commercial buildings for civic and social purposes.
Preservation and Modern Use (20th Century–Present)
By the 20th century, the Union Hotel was recognized for its historical importance.
- Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972
- Acquired and restored by New York State the same year
Since then, it has served several public functions:
- Visitor Center for the nearby Sackets Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site
- Later converted (with a 2000 addition) into the Seaway Trail Discovery Center, highlighting regional history and tourism
Window Restoration Project
The window restoration project at the Union Hotel represents a meaningful opportunity to contribute to the preservation of a truly historic landmark.
Our team is honored to help maintain the character and integrity of this site, which holds deep cultural and architectural significance within the community.
This project focuses on carefully restoring the hotel’s original windows while improving durability and performance. Each window is:
- Individually assessed
- Restored with attention to historical detail
- Treated using materials and methods that respect the building’s heritage while meeting modern standards
We are especially proud to be part of a project that not only revitalizes a structure but also preserves the stories and legacy embedded within it.
The Union Hotel stands as a testament to the rich history of Sackets Harbor. Contributing to its preservation is both a privilege and a responsibility we take seriously.
Through this work, we aim to support the longevity of the building while maintaining its authentic appearance for future generations.
Being involved in safeguarding such an important piece of history is something we take great pride in, and we look forward to seeing the restored windows enhance the beauty and legacy of this remarkable site.
